The issue of the BTP Green with maturity in 2031, placed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2023, for an amount of 10 billion euros and an annual rate of 4.00%, paid in two semi-annual coupons, has just won the "Largest Green Bond of 2023" award given by the international organization Climate Bonds Initiative.
The Climate Bonds Awards recognize the work and achievements of financial institutions, organizations and governments around the world that have excelled in the field of sustainable finance and climate action and have led the development of the market in 2023.
Specifically, Italy's contribution to the development of the sustainable market through the BTP Green issuance program that since 2021 reached a total volume of 45,65 billion euros in 2023.
The funds raised were used to finance expenditures in different areas, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, construction, transportation, water, pollution prevention and reduction, circular economy, environmental and biodiversity protection, and research projects.
“We are honored to receive the award again this year, which testifies to Italy's commitment to supporting the ecological transition though its budget. The issuance of the BTP Green 2031 represents one of the largest placements ever carried out in the green bond segment” underlined the director of public debt, Davide Iacovoni, also highlighting that "in three years since the start of the Green BTP program, this type of product has already received three awards from the CBI, a sign of financial community’s broad interest. Italy - he added - is placing these bonds regularly both through syndications and through traditional auctions and from 2024 onwards the commitment is to keep on issuing them. The goal is to intercept an increasingly qualified audience of investors and highlight Italy's long-lasting commitment towards environmental sustainability.
