Today in Brussels, Italian Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti attended the Ecofin meeting focusing on the reform of EU economic governance.
Minister Giorgetti stated that “We have worked in a firm and constructive way in order for the conclusions on the reform of the stability pact to be approved today by Ecofin”. He also added that “We support the final version of the pact that provides, as we had hoped, for the new reform to be approved by the end of the year in order to be able to tackle the 2024 transition in a realistic manner and with achievable targets”. “We also consider it very important to have reaffirmed national responsibility regarding the medium-term budget plans of individual countries. We are aware and respectful of the different opinions and concerns of countries such as Germany”, continued Giorgetti, concluding that “At the same time, we believe it is crucial that future fiscal rules promote investment in all strategic sectors, including the environment, digitisation, and defence”.
Minister Giorgetti also met with the Vice President of the EU Commission Valdis Dombrovskis. The wide-ranging and frank meeting focused on the positive progress achieved with the Ecofin final document, the economic situation in Italy in the light of recent events, future prospects, and the state of the NRRP.
