Banff, 21 May 2025 – "Italy continues to work to ensure that the final compromise communiqué can be reached. We consider it crucial." This was stated by Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti during the meeting of the G7 finance ministers and central bank governors in Banff, Canada, from 20 to 22 May. The global economy, Ukraine, security and economic growth were at the centre of discussions at the international forum.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Giorgetti met with German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil: the focus of the cordial and constructive discussion was on European strategies and defence spending ahead of the NATO assembly, digital taxation, support for Ukraine, and the tariffs announced by the US. A friendly and cordial meeting was also held with the Canadian Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, to discuss G7 topics, with a particular focus on European defence decisions, ahead of the NATO assembly. Defence spending, tariffs, digital tax were the topics of the cordial and productive meeting with the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.
