- OECD MINISTERIAL MEETING - ITALY ELECTED TO THE PRESIDENCY IN 2010

Press release N° 182 of 11/26/2009

Italy was today elected to chair the 2010 OECD Ministerial Meeting to be held next May in Paris.

The OECD - Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development - includes 30 full members, including Italy, while 10 other countries are currently undertaking, at various levels, negotiations for full membership.

Alongside the UN, the OECD has always been the principal maker of what are commonly known as the "rules of the game" in international cooperation by defining agreements, standards and recommendations in all major sectors of operations.

Since the start if the economic crisis, the OECD has strengthened its position as a global reference point as well as its commitment in the discussion, redrafting and revision of the system of rules that are actually in force. It provided a significant contribution to the Italian G8 presidency earlier this year, while playing a key role within the framework of the G20.

For the Italian government this is a very important achievement, besides being a source of pride, to have been elected, among Member countries, to chair the 2010 OECD Ministerial Meeting.
